Biostatistics and Epidemiology Support
The goal of the Biostatistical Support Service is to provide investigators expert advice on proper study design and data analysis. The support includes consults with the center biostatistician, faculty consultants from the School of Public Health, Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology, Medical Sciences Campus, University of Puerto Rico, and use of statistical software. Mariely Nieves Plaza, MS is the Biostatistician of the RCMI-CRC. She offers advice about study design and statistical analysis to investigators using the clinical center whose protocols are in the planning stages and/or throughout the study period.
In addition she works closely with the consultants of the Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology. The faculty consultants are: Cynthia Pérez, PhD, Ana Patricia Ortiz, PhD, Haidee Venegas, Ms, DrPhc and Guillermo Tortolero, PhD
They have a rotating schedule through which consultant support in biostatistics and epidemiology is available to all clinical investigators.
The biostatistical support includes:
Biostatistical software:
Biostatistic Computer Cluster Unit:
Biostatistics and computing services provides a Bioinformatic Unit, a stable computing infracstructure, for data management and statistical analysis, an integral part of the advancement of scientific research. This cluster provides clinical investigators with the latest computer tools to facilitate the analysis and subsequent publication process needed after research data are collected. This involves entering, storing, and retrieving the data, statistical analysis, manuscript preparation, and production of colorful charts and graphs for presentation and publication. It includes many software options for word processing, statistical packages, data entry and database functions. Translations between various software packages are available. This facility provides internet functions such as e-mail, WWW access and journals on-line, so the investigators have the opportunity to seek literature on-line about scientific questions involved in their research study. In this way, their scientific publications and presentations communicate the many valuable insights gained through clinical research at the University of Puerto Rico, Medical Science Campus.

They have a rotating schedule through which consultant support in biostatistics and epidemiology is available to all clinical investigators.
The biostatistical support includes:
- Provide advice about study design based on the scientific questions involved and definition of the study population.
- Help investigators with questionnaire design.
- Provide sampling strategies and sample size determination for the proposed studies.
- Verify that studies will have sufficient statistical power to support for inferences to be drawn.
- Assess the measurability of proposed study endpoints and ascertaining that plans have been made for data analysis.
- After approval, the biostatistician is available to consult on appropriate analysis and interpretation of the results.
Biostatistical software:
- The softwares most commonly used are: Epi-Info 6.04D version for questionnaire design, SAS 8.0 version for statitical analysis, n-Query 5.0 version for sample size and statistical power calculation.
- Other softwares available: SYSTAT 10, Sigma Plot 2001, Minitab, StatXact 4.01 version, LogXact 2.1 version, S-PLUS 2000, Harvard Graphics 4.0 and Microsoft Office XP and Microsoft Office 2000.
